Scientists solve the mystery of a hole in the Antarctic Sea

,- In 2016 satellite photos from space revealed an enigmatic hole in the Lazarev Sea near Antarctica.

Weeks passed as the hole on the continent perplexed scientists about its source.

Scientists have finally cracked the code of what produced the enigmatic feature in the continent's enormous ice ocean, some seven years after the incident.

Antarctica experiences tremendous change every Australian winter. This continent is encircled by an ice ocean that essentially doubles in size.

But in the center of a frigid ocean roughly twice the size of the United States, or Switzerland, a unique hole known as the polynya developed over the winters of 2016 and 2017.

It is the 2016 version of "Maud Rise". Space reported that Earth monitoring satellites initially detected it in the 1970s, particularly in the winter of 1974–1976.

Although the reason is yet unknown, scientists believe that the pollen will return each winter.

A recent study that was published in the journal Science has identified a previously unnoticed crucial mechanism that explains how holes can grow and persist for several weeks.(Newsline Paper Teams)
